AMC Campus Demolition Moves Forward, Paving the Way at BLVDNEXT

Demolition at the former Atlanta Medical Center’s 22‑acre campus is well underway after work officially began on June 30. Crews have already razed the former Wellness Center, and the hospital towers are slated to come down by year’s end, according to Barry Roberts, founder of Trinity Green and Atlanta Demolition, which is leading local efforts for The Integral Group and Wellstar Health System.
The work is an early step in BLVDNEXT’s transformation of the site into a mixed‑use district, with a focus on responsible execution and long‑term neighborhood benefit.
The team aims to recycle the vast majority of building materials on-site concrete crushing and metals and metals recycling.
“We’ve completed the interior asbestos abatement and are now working on exterior abatement,” Roberts said, noting the main tower’s asbestos-containing paint must be removed before it can be demolished. The remaining buildings are now just a shell.
“Right now, the site looks like a big Christmas present,” Roberts said. “There’s a big bow around the main tower.”
Rainy days, Roberts added, help keep dust down and minimize impacts to surrounding neighborhoods
Multiple contractors are contributing to the demolition, including Corporate Environmental Risk Management, Magoba, and Haliburton Heavy Equipment Operator School.
The school recently graduated 10 trainees — all Old Fourth Ward residents — who are now working on the project. Ranging in age from 18 to 60, the group completed an eight-week training program on operating excavator equipment.
“It’s exciting for the (first-timers) to see a building coming down,” Lawanda Haliburton said.
The school has received numerous applications and calls from the community inquiring about future training classes, she said.
Separately, Roberts takes time to answer questions or concerns from residents curious about the demolition process and its impact on the neighborhood. He and his team welcome site visits, he said.
