Building the Historical Record:Archives, Oral Histories, and What Comes Next

The history of the Old Fourth Ward is rich, layered, and often scattered across archives throughout the city. The research initiative behind the redevelopment of the Atlanta Medical Center site aims to bring these stories together, combining historical documents, community memories, and new writing to create a fuller, more accessible record of the neighborhood and the hospital at its core.
Alongside this archival work, the team is preparing a significant oral history initiative. This work will include bringing forward existing oral histories related to the hospital and neighborhood, stories that have been preserved but rarely highlighted, as well as producing a new series of interviews with former residents, hospital workers, civic leaders, and cultural stewards. The goal is to ensure that the historical record reflects lived experiences, not just written documents.
This research directly supports the storytelling on BlvdNext.com. The History page will launch with three introductory narratives highlighting key figures and turning points, including the founding of the infirmary in 1901 and the community impact of the 1966 murder of Hulet Varner, a 16-year-old African American teenager.
Next, the team will publish a digital archive summarizing the time-capsule materials, followed by a searchable research database that brings together sources from multiple libraries and collections. As the oral histories are recorded, transcribed, and cataloged, they will also be added to the site.
Through these efforts, the project creates a layered and transparent record of the AMC site’s past, built through careful scholarship and a commitment to honoring the people and stories that shaped the Old Fourth Ward. This ongoing work ensures that redevelopment moves forward with an understanding of the neighborhood’s rich history and the memories carried by generations of residents.
