The hospital’s 1920s façade will be preserved, honoring its history and deep roots in the community.
David Yoakley Mitchell, executive director of the Atlanta Preservation Center, told Channel 2 Action News that preserving the past helps sustain Atlanta’s identity and residents’ sense of belonging.
“You can’t have a situation where someone lives in a certain place for a certain demographic, for a certain economic, for a certain period of time, and then change that in a short period of time and expect them to have a legacy experience,” Mitchell said.
Ferma Corporation, a national firm known for dismantling large industrial structures, is managing the demolition process and plans to recycle up to 95 percent of the building materials.
Barry Roberts, founder of Trinity Green and Atlanta Demolition, is leading the demolition on behalf of The Integral Group and Wellstar Health System.
Redevelopment plans for the 22-acre campus include residential, commercial and retail space, affordable housing, green space, as well as a wellness component.
Together, these efforts aim to preserve the spirit of the former hospital while preparing the site for a new chapter of community life and wellness.
